
A top-10 ACC showdown went in favor of No. 6 Virginia on Saturday at Dorrance Field, as the Cavaliers won a tight 18-16 game over No. 3 UNC–handing the Tar Heels their first home loss of the season.
William Perry led the Tar Heels (8-2, 1-2 ACC) with a career-high four goals in the game, while Chris Gray and Connor McCarthy each added three goals apiece.
After being tied 7-7 at halftime, the Tar Heels managed to take a 10-9 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
From there, Virginia scored five consecutive goals to take a commanding 14-10 lead and never let UNC pull closer than two goals the rest of the way.
The Cavaliers won 11 of the 12 face-offs in the fourth quarter and 26 of 38 for the game, allowing them to have the advantage in time of possession.
UNC has now lost its last two games after beginning the season with eight straight wins.
“The ACC is tough – everybody is in the top 10,” UNC head coach Joe Breschi said afterwards. “We’ve got to work on getting better as we go up to Syracuse next weekend.”
