Four players finished with two goals on Sunday at Dorrance Field, as the fourth-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team earned a crucial ACC victory by a score of 12-10 over No. 2 Notre Dame.

Chris Gray, William Perry, Justin Anderson and Henry Schertzinger each scored twice for the Tar Heels (10-2, 3-2 ACC), as they matched their highest single-season ACC win total since 2016.

“It’s a huge win for us, one we really needed, and on Senior Day,” Gray said afterwards. “It means a lot to the upperclassmen and the guys on the team in general. I think the underclassmen did a great job of playing for the upperclassmen and the upperclassmen did a great job of leading. We got a complete game from everyone. It was a nice team win for sure.”

Notre Dame tied its lowest scoring output of the season, while falling to 6-3 overall and 2-3 inside the gauntlet that is the ACC.

The Tar Heels built a 5-4 lead at halftime after both teams traded goals back and forth in the first half. In the second half, UNC outscored the Fighting Irish 5-3 in the third quarter to take a comfortable three-goal lead into the final period.

Notre Dame scored with just over a minute remaining to make the score 12-10, but UNC managed to hold on the rest of the way with no further damage.

“You can’t ask for a better group of young men to lead your team – that’s been the beauty of this,” UNC head coach Joe Breschi said. “These are guys who love each other, appreciate each other and enjoy every moment they have on the field together.”
