A late defensive stand on Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium helped the UNC men’s lacrosse team finally snap its seven-game losing streak, as the Tar Heels held off the No. 14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish for a 10-9 victory on Senior Day.

Andy Matthews had a goal and three assists for the Tar Heels (7-7), while Tanner Cook, Chris Cloutier and Alex Trippi each contributed two goals apiece to the winning cause.

Perhaps the best story of the game, however, was former fourth-string goalie Alex Bassil–who made a career-high 14 saves, including one with 10 seconds remaining that sealed the outcome of the game.

Notre Dame (6-5) dominated in most statistical categories, winning 16 of the 21 faceoffs and racking up 41 shots compared to just 30 for the Tar Heels. Still, though, the UNC defense came up big when it mattered most–earning the team’s first win since March 3.

Because the Tar Heels finished fifth out of five teams in the ACC, they did not qualify for the ACC Tournament.
