In what was by far the closest game the top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team has played in this season, senior Jamie Ortega scored five goals to help the Tar Heels escape with an 11-10 victory on the road against No. 4 Notre Dame.

With the victory, UNC improves to 12-0 overall and 6-0 inside the ACC in 2021.

The Tar Heels opened the game by building a 5-1 lead, before Notre Dame (6-3, 3-3 ACC) ended the first half on a 6-1 run to take a slim 7-6 halftime lead.

After the break, UNC came out of the locker room and scored three straight goals–including two by Ortega–to take the lead back for good.

Caitlyn Wurzburger collected a yellow card in the final minute, giving Notre Dame a chance to tie the game with a man advantage. The Tar Heels successfully killed off the penalty, though, and sealed up the tough win.

This now marks the best start to the season in UNC history, and the program is one win away from tying its all-time longest winning streak of 20 games.
