Playing on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California on Saturday night, the 18th-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team suffered an 11-7 loss at the hands of the No. 2 Maryland Terrapins.

The game was part of the Pacific Lacrosse Shootout event, and was also the fourth consecutive loss for the Tar Heels (6-4) following a 6-0 start to the season.

Maryland, meanwhile, improves to 7-1 this year as the defending national champions.

Connor Kelly’s four goals led the way for the Terrapins, while Jared Bernhardt added three of his own.

UNC received two goals apiece from William Perry and Chris Cloutier, but was never truly able to pose a serious threat during the game.

Maryland jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first half, that was later extended to 8-2 before the Tar Heels made a small run in the second half by scoring five of the next six goals.

It was all for nought, however, as the Terrapins showed why they’re considered among the top teams in the nation year in and year out.

Another tough test awaits UNC, as it will face No. 3 Duke in its ACC opener on Friday, March 30 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.
