The ACC announced Friday morning that UNC freshman Reza Merchant was selected as the conference Men’s Epee Fencer of the Year.

Merchant won the ACC Men’s Fencing MVP honor at this year’s ACC Championships after claiming the conference title in the men’s epee individual event. He also went 6-0 during the team competition.

For the season, Merchant compiled a record of 18-6 and the fifth-best FSF (fencing strength factor) in the entire country.

He becomes the first Tar Heel to win ACC men’s individual honors since the conference reintroduced fencing back in 2015.

“We’re all so happy he is part of our family,” UNC coach Matt Jednak said, about Merchant. “He has always been a hard-working, self-reflective, and physical fencer.  This year he has grown into an amazing teammate and I am very excited to see where the next few years take him.”
