The UNC men’s fencing and men’s indoor track and field team’s took home historic ACC championships over the weekend. For the fencing team, it’s the first ACC title since 1980; for track and field, it’s the first since 1996.
The fencers put together a stellar 3-0 performance on Sunday, including back-to-back wins over top-ranked Notre Dame (the championship hosts) and Duke. Freshman Boris Muga earned Most Valuable Fencer honors after going 8-1 in his Sunday bouts. The women’s team finished third.

The ACC Fencing Championships were revived in 2015 with the addition of Notre Dame to the conference. The Fighting Irish men had dominated the championships since that time, with seven titles.
Carolina dedicated its win to the late Ron Miller, the legendary former UNC fencing coach who led the men’s program to eight titles and won the women’s program’s first in 2018 before passing away in June. He coached at Carolina for 52 seasons.
The men’s track and field team’s title is the fourth in program history. Parker Wolfe set a school, meet and ACC record in the men’s mile final, clocking in at 3:54.17. Teammate Ethan Strand finished in third at 3:58.54.
Wolfe then went on to win the men’s 3,000m later that day with a 7:51.11. He was named Co-MVP of the championship. Three other Tar Heels finished in the top 10: Strand in fourth, Alex Phillip in fifth and Jake Gebhardt in sixth. Other Tar Heels to post Top 10 finishes in their events included Blaise Atkinson in the 60m hurdles (third, 7.84 seconds) and Spencer Williams in shot put (fourth, 18.02 m).
Overall, the men’s team finished with 93 points, nine ahead of second-place Florida State.
