The UNC track & field programs showed off the newly-renovated Eddie Smith Field House at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge in Chapel Hill on Saturday. The event was the first indoor track & field meet to be held on the UNC campus since January of 2020.

Renovations to the Field House included new light fixtures, fresh paint, updated branding and new coaching offices. Keen to show off their new digs, UNC won multiple events: the men’s and women’s mile run, women’s 800m, men’s and women’s 1000m, men’s and women’s 4×400 relays and the women’s weight throw.

Sophomore Jason Thomson claimed the win in the men’s mile run with a time of 4:09.03, while two of his teammates each finished in the top 6. Carolina swept the podium in the 1000m, with Michael Spragley winning with a time of 2:25.65. The team of Blaise Atkinson, Jared Williams, Trevor Paschall and Craig Saddler II won the 4×400 relay.

On the women’s side, Stanford transfer Jordan Fong won the weight throw with a personal best of 19.16m in her first appearance as a Tar Heel. Carolina swept the podium in the mile, with Natalie Tyner taking first place a time of 4:52.77. Madison Huecker won the women’s 1000m at 2:59.13, while Alyssa Hernandez won the 800m at 2:15.29.

The weekend’s event is the only one scheduled to take place in Chapel Hill this season.
