The Carolina Academic Excellence Award is an annual celebration of the two athletic programs at UNC, one men’s team and one women’s team, that give the most outstanding performances over the previous school year.

For the 2020-21 school year, that honor goes to the men’s fencing team and the women’s golf team.

For the fencers, it is the fourth consecutive year they have won the award in only their fourth year of existence. Rising senior Beni Rabinowitz and rising sophomore Alex Mulvaney both were named to the Academic All-ACC team while leading the Tar Heels to a sixth place finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Rabinowitz won the 2021 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award as well, becoming the first Tar Heel to take home that honor.

This is the first time that the women’s golf program has won the Academic Excellence Award. The team compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.794, with rising sophomore Nicole Adam and rising senior Jennifer Zhou being named to the Academic All-ACC team.

Each team will have their names added to a trophy in the Loudermilk Center and receive and Old Well trophy, as well as be honored at a dinner later in the fall.
