Junior Inez Ng took the individual title and Carolina took the team title in a record-breaking performance at the Cavalier Regional Preview Tournament in Virginia this week. UNC finished 22-under par to win the tournament by 18 strokes.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team playing under par in all three rounds despite the weather and conditions that were really tough,” said head coach Aimee Neff, who has now led the Tar Heels to five tournament wins in four seasons. “Inez just had a really impressive performance to win by eight. She was so steady, even birdieing two of her last three holes with a big lead.”

Ng shot a 69 in the first round, a 65 in the second and a 67 in the third to capture the title with a 12-under par. Her 201 total strokes are the fewest ever by a UNC women’s golfer in a 54-hole tournament, and her score to par tied the school record.

UNC’s team stroke total of 830 also broke a school record, and its 22-under score to par is the second lowest in program history. After Ng, four other Tar Heels placed in the top 10: Megan Streicher (second), Ing Iadpluem (fifth), Helen Young (sixth) and Katie Vu (10th).

Up next, the women’s golf program will return home to host the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill. The tournament runs from October 11 through October 13.
