The UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill has been ranked the second-best hospital in North Carolina, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” report.

The report, which was released on Tuesday, included the UNC Health hospital having three national rankings in three adult specialties. The Medical Center ranked 18th in gynecology, 36th in ear, nose and throat, and 39th in nephrology. The hospital was also nationally recognized for success those fields in last year’s U.S. News & World Report’s rankings.

These latest rankings come after UNC Children’s Hospital received high national marks in seven pediatric sub-specialties by the magazine in June. Two of those rankings, for pediatric diabetes/endocrinology and pediatric pulmonology, fell within the top 25 nationally.

The top hospital in the state, according to this year’s report, is just miles down Tobacco Road. The Duke University Hospital earned the state’s top hospital honor, with 11 national rankings in adult specialties and nine children’s specialties.

Another UNC Health location also made North Carolina’s top five. The U.S. News & World Report ranked the UNC REX hospital in Raleigh as the fifth best hospital in the state.

To be nationally ranked in a specialty by the magazine, a facility must be rated among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for that specialty.
