In the annual showdown between the UNC and Duke men’s soccer programs, it was the eighth-ranked Tar Heels who got the best of the No. 23 Blue Devils on Saturday night–edging out their bitter rivals by a score of 2-1 at McPherson Stadium in Browns Summit, North Carolina.

UNC (6-1, 2-0 ACC) scored both of its goals off of set pieces, with Alan Winn putting the Tar Heels ahead in the eighth minute after sending home a header off of a beautiful cross from Cam Lindley–his fourth goal in the team’s last four games.

Duke (4-1-1) then took control of the game until finding the equalizer off the foot of Daniele Proch.

Another Tar Heel corner kick ultimately led to the game-winning goal, as Mauricio Pineda placed the ball inside the back post following assists from Lindley and Jelani Pieters in the 40th minute.

Lindley now has seven assists through UNC’s first seven games, which leads the entire ACC.

The Tar Heels held strong throughout the second half, using outstanding play from freshman goalkeeper Alec Smir to keep the Blue Devils from salvaging a tie.

It was also the 20th consecutive game between UNC and Duke that has been either a draw or decided by one goal.
