The UNC men’s soccer team opened its regular season in a big way on Friday night in Durham, defeating the rival Duke Blue Devils by a score of 2-0.
Matt Constant and Santiago Herrera each scored for the Tar Heels, while goalkeeper Alec Smir made some critical saves to keep the Blue Devils off the board.
Constant opened the scoring early in the first half with a fourth-minute header coming off of a free kick by teammate Milo Garvanian. Herrera added the insurance tally late in the second half when his free kick bounced off the wall of Duke defenders and into the corner of the net.
With the loss, Duke fell to 1-2 to begin its season.
