A 47-game winning streak dating back nearly three years came to a stunning halt on Friday, as the UNC field hockey team was stunned on the road in a 3-1 loss to the Louisville Cardinals.

The win streak was the longest active streak in NCAA Division I sports, and the second-longest in NCAA field hockey history.

Louisville (3-0) took control of the game in the first quarter following a penalty corner goal by Mercedes Pastor, then doubled the lead when Pastor assisted on a goal by Margot Lawn just before halftime.

UNC All-American Erin Matson recorded the only goal of the game for the Tar Heels (1-1) in the third quarter, but it would not be enough to keep the Tar Heels from tasting defeat for the first time since the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Lawn then added her second goal of the game with just seconds to play, capping off perhaps the biggest victory in the history of the Louisville program.

The Cardinals also out-shot the Tar Heels on Friday, finishing with 10 shots on goal compared to only four for UNC.
