Erin Matson scored twice on Friday at Karen Shelton Stadium to lead the UNC field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Louisville in the first game of the spring season.

Senior Amanda Hendry made eight saves to complete the shutout in goal, as the Tar Heels picked up right where they left off in the fall by defeating Louisville in a rematch of the ACC Championship Game.

This was the third meeting overall between the two schools this season, with Louisville winning the first matchup to snap what had been a 47-game winning streak for UNC.

Matson scored less than two minutes into Friday’s matchup on a penalty corner, before adding another on an assist by Meredith Sholder just before halftime.

The Tar Heels improve to 11-1 on the season with the win. Louisville falls to 8-3 with the loss.

“Playing somebody like Louisville in the first game of the season only makes us better because it points out our weaknesses,” head coach Karen Shelton said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board, back to the practice field and see if we can’t make progress for next week.”
