Three goals in the first half helped carry the second-ranked UNC field hockey team to a victory in its ACC opener on Friday evening, a 3-1 win on the road over the No. 11 Louisville Cardinals.
The Tar Heels are now 5-0 this season, with four of those victories coming against ranked opponents.
Freshman sensation Erin Matson was the first UNC player to score on Friday,as her goal in the 20th minute tied the game at 1-1 after Louisville struck first blood with a goal from Katie Schneider in the 10th minute of play.
Not long after Matson’s game-tying goal, the Tar Heels used back-to-back goals from Catherine Hayden and Ashley Hoffman–a pair of tallies within five minutes of one another–to take control of the game for good.
Neither team was able to score in the second half, as the UNC defense tightened up and refused to allow Louisville any opportunities to come back–holding the Cardinals to just five shots over the course of the game.
“I’m pleased with the win in our first ACC contest,” head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “It’s good to have that under our belt. Now we have a quick turnaround before our next game, but I hope we’ll handle it and play well against Cal tomorrow.”
