In the debut episode of “Inside Voices,” (available to stream at the bottom of this page) host Kevin “Kaze” Thomas sits down for a conversation with Dasan Ahanu — local poet, artist, MC, producer, UNC professor and activist.

The aim of “Inside Voices” is to confront truth, uncomfortable and obvious alike, and share the voices of those facing struggle while working to find a path to positive change. As the first episode of an ongoing series, “Inside Voices” has quite a bit of ground to cover. Read host Kaze Thomas’ introduction to the show below:

Our current social and political climate is a strong reflection of our nation’s historic inability to talk about issues pertaining to race. People are often unwilling to even discuss these topics. These conversations are often intense and make us feel uncomfortable, or we feel we lack the information to make an informed opinion. But the truth is, there is a history of documented unresolved acts of racism, injustice, and hate. A truth that is very inconvenient, yet must still be confronted in order to change. There is a system that many feel does not work for them, and is structured on maintaining an inequality. In order to find our own solutions, these conversations are necessary.

We should be able to hear all the voices that reflect the current state of issues pertaining to Black and people of color, and allies in the struggle of all races and nationalities. We want to create a platform for authentic voices, identify our current systemic issues and figure out what we can do to make it better. A show to allow our community to have these discussions before they trend.

We are often told to be quiet. To lower our volume. Like a child, told to use our “inside voice.”

Yet it is the voice inside of us, the voice that has depth in spirit, and is invested in peace and love as an outcome, that is the closest to the truth.
