This week on “Inside Voices,” join host Kevin “Kaze” Thomas for conversation with Pierce Freelon — musician, father, Durham city council member, founder of Blackspace, UNC alumnus and more. Freelon is an extraordinarily busy multi-hyphenate, and his discussion with Kaze covers everything from using your platform to make a difference in your community and the mental health crisis aspect of COVID to dealing with tragedy and raising kids.

“Now that I’m in a position with some political power to do something about it, I’ve really been trying to wrap my brain around what policies, what ways, can I use the seat at the table that I have to try to, you know, bend the arc of the universe, to quote King, towards justice and towards equity and towards black liberation,” said Freelon. “As a Durham native, the only member of Durham city council who who’s born and raised in the Bull City, I feel a special responsibility to be creative in dreaming up some solutions and policy prescriptions that are out of the box and progressive and imaginative — because I’ve found, among other things, it’s a lack of imagination that’s keeping us from being able to envision a different future.”
