With over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit field, Jessie-Black’s current executive position at CommunityWorx has put her front-and-center for some difficult conversations as of late — not just because of the challenges presented to the nonprofit sector, but due to challenges unique to the sector due to COVID-19

“If nothing else, COVID has taught us that funding can be done differently,” said Jessie-Black. “You know, when COVID first hit, there were a lot of [funds made available] without a ton of accountability for the nonprofits, without a ton of what we call ‘hoops,’ jumping through hoops. And we know that it works, right? A lot of us are still around five months into this because of philanthropists and funders who saw a need and who acted quickly. And so we want to continue that momentum because we can’t go back to the way it was prior to that, it’s not sustainable and nonprofits won’t succeed if that continues.”

Listen below for the full conversation between Kaze and Jessie-Black about working to make a difference in a nonprofit framework as a person of color, the unique effects COVID has had on community improvement efforts, what it takes to succeed, what donations actually do and more.
