Four different Tar Heels scored for the UNC women’s soccer team in a 4-0 rout of the Miami Hurricanes Thursday night. No. 7 Carolina outshot Miami 26-1 over 90 minutes of game time, with three of their four goals coming in the second half of play.

However, due to a tiebreaker, the 12-2-3 Tar Heels (5-2-3 in ACC play) will finish in seventh place in the league standings. The ACC Tournament only takes the top six finishers in the conference. Carolina tied for sixth place with Wake Forest, but Wake took the final spot due to more wins against common opponents. The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons did not meet this year. This is the first time in the history of the program that the UNC women’s soccer team will not participate in the ACC Tournament.

Despite missing out on another week of conference action, Carolina is still ranked No. 7 in national polls and No. 4 in the RPI ratings. UNC will look to get healthy over an extended break before NCAA tournament action, as preseason All-ACC defender Maycee Bell missed the game against Miami with an injury.

The game itself was no contest, as Sam Meza opened up the scoring in the first half with her second goal of the season. Carolina did not allow a single Hurricanes shot in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Carolina tripled its advantage in a span of 46 seconds, with Emily Colton netting her team-leading seventh goal of the season, quickly followed by a strike from Emily Murphy to make the score 3-0 Carolina. Murphy had assisted Colton on the previous goal.

The Tar Heels added a fourth goal in the final ten minutes of play, with Talia Dellaperuta, who started in place of Bell, scoring her first of the season. The four goals were UNC’s most in a single match since scoring seven against Florida in September. Carolina finishes the 2021 regular season with a 6-1 road record, their only loss coming to NC State.

For now, all head coach Anson Dorrance and the Tar Heels can do is wait for the NCAA Tournament field to be announced. The ACC Tournament will conclude November 7, and NCAA bids will be announced the next day.
