Consider the Swamp drained.

The No. 2 UNC women’s soccer team left no stone unturned in Gainesville Friday evening, putting goals aplenty past the Florida Gators in a 7-1 rout.

Goals weren’t the only crooked numbers on the scoreboard, though. On the evening, Carolina outshot Florida by a 22-2 margin, and took 13 corners to only one by the hosts.

Freshman star Emily Murphy and preseason All-ACC forward Rachel Jones led the Tar Heels with four shots apiece. Both Murphy and Jones collected a goal and an assist.

Murphy’s assist may have been purely accidental, but that’s just the way things are going this year for the freshman from England, who nearly signed with European powerhouse Chelsea before the season. In the tenth minute, Murphy pivoted and unleashed a shot from outside the 18-yard box, which deflected off a Florida defender and straight to teammate Emily Colton, who slotted it into the net for the opening goal of the match.

Colton would collect her second goal of the night, and fourth of the season, less than a minute into the second half. With the Tar Heels already up 3-0, midfielders Libby Moore and Aleigh Gambone both had shots against an overwhelmed Florida back line blocked, before Colton outran her defender to the rebound and put away Carolina’s fourth goal.

Murphy netted her fourth goal of the year on a point-blank header off a picture-perfect cross from Moore just five minutes later. But Jones picked up the highlight of the match when she scored goal number six for Carolina, a laser from well outside the 18-yard box worthy of Emperor Palpatine’s finest battle station.

Senior forward Rachel Dorwart put home goal number seven in the 81st minute, her fourth of the season. By the time the final whistle blew, three Tar Heels – Murphy, Colton and Dorwart – had all tied for the team lead with four goals through seven matches.

The seven goals in total on the evening matches Carolina’s seven wins in seven games this season, including three in true road environments. The Tar Heels will try to snag another win in hostile territory Sunday afternoon, when they travel to Orlando to visit No. 17 UCF.
