A 4-0 shutout victory over Wake Forest on Thursday night in Chapel Hill moved the top-ranked UNC women’s soccer team to 7-0 early in the 2019 season, while handing the Demon Deacons (5-1-1) their first loss of the season.

Sophomore Alessia Russo scored twice the lead the Tar Heel offense, while Ru Mucherera and Zoe Redei each chipped in one goal apiece.

Redei opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a header coming off of a cross by teammate Lois Joel. Mucherera then found the back of the net just over a minute later to give UNC a 2-0 halftime lead.

That 2-0 scoreline held for over 40 minutes, until Russo scored back-to-back goals in the 79th and 87th minutes to put the icing on the cake for the Tar Heel victory.

This marks Russo’s second consecutive game with two goals.
