Syracuse put a damper on the final home game at Carmichael Arena for UNC senior guard Jamie Cherry on Thursday night, as the Orange rained in an ACC record 20 three-pointers on the way to an 86-80 win over the Tar Heels.

Freshman forward Janelle Bailey led UNC (14-14, 4-11 ACC) with 25 points and 12 rebounds in the game, while an emotional Cherry added 23 points of her own.

Still, though, it would not be enough to overcome the visitors’ three-point barrage.

Gabrielle Cooper went 8-for-10 from beyond the arc for the Orange, finishing with a game-high 28 points.

This helped Syracuse overcome a 39-27 disadvantage in the rebounding department and a 48 percent shooting night by the Tar Heels.

The teams went into halftime tied at 41 points apiece, and remained close for the majority of the third quarter.

In the final period, however, the Orange knocked down five threes and extended the lead past double digits for a short period of time–keeping UNC at least an arm’s length away up to the final buzzer.

The loss was the eighth straight for head coach Sylvia Hatchell’s squad, which has just one game remaining in its regular season.
