For the first time in five tries, the UNC women’s basketball program earned a win on the road at Pittsburgh on Sunday–as the Tar Heels came out on top by a score of 81-72.

Senior center Janelle Bailey led UNC (10-8, 5-8 ACC) with 22 points, while graduate student guard Stephanie Watts added 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Tar Heels took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and held on the rest of the way for what was also their first road win of any kind this season.

UNC set a new season low with just nine turnovers and converted on a whopping 26 of its 31 free throw attempts.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Tar Heels led by 14 points and would ultimately hang on for the win–improving to 8-1 this season in games they hold the lead at halftime.

Pitt fell to 4-9 overall with the loss and 2-8 against conference opponents.

“We know every game is a ‘must win’ and we know we have to come out with energy,” Bailey said afterwards. “The games we don’t come out with energy don’t go so well for us. So that was really big for us. We’re just playing for each other.”
