UNC baseball might have to wait a little longer before the first pitch of the season.

The Tar Heels announced on Sunday that the season-opening series against Kentucky has been canceled due to COVID-19 issues within Kentucky’s program. The series was scheduled to be played from February 19-21 in Chapel Hill.

UNC also said that it will work to reschedule a replacement series for opening weekend.

This is the first season for new head coach Scott Forbes, who takes over for Mike Fox who retired over the summer after 22 years with the Tar Heels. Assistants Jesse Wierzbicki and Bryant Gaines earned promotions under Forbes’ staff and Jason Howell was hired away from the Chicago White Sox to round out the coaching roster.

If no series is scheduled for opening weekend, the Tar Heels’ next series will be against Virginia in Chapel Hill from February 26-28.
