The UNC wrestling team picked up its first victory of the young season on Sunday afternoon, with a 30-6 blowout at Carmichael Arena over the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers.

After beginning the season ranked No. 22, the Tar Heels fell out of the polls after losing a pair of dual matches to Purdue and Oklahoma State back on Nov. 11.

In the first home match of the year on Sunday, UNC redshirt senior Danny Chaid kicked off a well-rounded team performance with a pin over Appalachian State’s Randall Diabe at 197 pounds.

The pin gave the Tar Heels (1-2) an early 6-0 lead in the team score, which they would continue to build on by winning each of the next five matches in the dual–including two by major decision.

Only a pair of close decision wins at 157 and 165 pounds kept the Mountaineers (2-1) from being shut out on the day.

With the outcome of the dual no longer in doubt, UNC’s Ethan Ramos–the nation’s No. 11 ranked wrestler at 174 pounds–defeated No. 20 Forrest Przybysz 12-2 for an impressive major decision victory in the day’s only match between ranked opponents.

It was also a revenge win for the Tar Heels, who lost 18-16 to Appalachian State last season.
