Junior midfielder Dorian Bailey helped the 10th-ranked UNC women’s soccer team open up ACC play on the right note Sunday afternoon, as her goal in the 58th minute provided the difference in the Tar Heels’ 1-0 victory over No. 16 Florida State in Tallahassee.

It was the first time UNC (5-2, 1-0 ACC) had won in Tallahassee since 2011–and the first home loss for Florida State in its last 36 matches there–which is made that much more notable since the Seminoles were picked as the preseason favorites to win the league this year.

Bailey’s goal came shortly after a corner kick from teammate Joanna Boyles.

Boyles lofted the ball into the box to Abby Elinsky, who headed the ball into the turf. Bailey then pounced on the rebound with her own head, and put the ball past Florida State goalkeeper Cassie Miller from five yards out.

The Tar Heels held strong defensively throughout the game, as their fresh legs–which hadn’t played a game since Sep. 7–seemed to give them a slight advantage.
