After spending this past season as an assistant coach for the UNC women’s basketball team, Tim Taylor was named Tuesday as the new head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy.

This represents the first head coaching job for Taylor, a longtime assistant at Virginia–where he served three separate stints as an assistant before joining the UNC staff under new head coach Courtney Banghart for the 2019-20 campaign.

Taylor becomes the fourth former assistant of Banghart’s to go on to a head coaching job, joining Melanie Moore at Xavier, Megan Griffith at Columbia and Chessie Jackson at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

“As a program, we celebrate Tim as he takes on this new chapter in his life,” Banghart said. “Tim has served for a long tenure in the sport of women’s basketball and has waited patiently for a chance to take over his own program. He cares most about building meaningful relationships while making an impact and leaving a legacy in those lives that he touches. He is enormously proud to be able to represent one of the more special institutions in our country.”
