Junior hitter Skyler Wine led the UNC volleyball team to its first win of the young season on Friday night at Carmichael Arena, as her 15 kills helped the Tar Heels sweep the UNC-Greensboro Spartans by a score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-19).
It was also the home opener for UNC (1-2), which was returning from a tough road trip to Minnesota where it lost back-to-back games to Wisconsin and Minnesota–a pair of teams ranked among the top 15 in the nation.
Destiny Cox added seven kills to the winning effort, while Raleigh Clark contributed five of her own.
The Tar Heels had a tough time shaking off the Spartans in each of the first two sets, but managed to squeeze out the victory in both before cruising to a six-point win in the third–and final–set.
Perhaps the main difference in the match was UNC’s .311 hitting percentage, which was much better than the .207 number posted by UNC-Greensboro.
