Coming off its first loss of the season last weekend against No. 2 Indiana, the 12th-ranked UNC men’s soccer team responded in a big way Friday night in Williamsburg, Virginia,
The Tar Heels scored three goals in the first half on the way to a 6-1 blowout over the host William & Mary Tribe in a game that was never all that close from the start.
Giovanni Montesdeoca and Nils Bruening each scored two goals apiece, while Mauricio Pineda added a goal and an assist. Sophomore forward Alex Rose also got in on the scoring as he added UNC’s sixth, and final, tally in the 81st minute.
Pineda started the onslaught just under 15 minutes into the action when he capitalized on a turnover and ended up scoring to put the Tar Heels ahead 1-0.
From there Bruening added each of his two goals–including one assisted by Pineda–to give UNC a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
Montesdeoca then added his first goal of the night on an assist from Jeremy Kelly in the 59th minute to make it four unanswered tallies for the Tar Heels.
Not until the 80th minute did William & Mary get on the board, as Julian Ngoh capitalized on a UNC turnover to score a goal for the home side.
Just over a minute after Ngoh’s goal, Montesdeoca and Rose then scored back-to-back for the Tar Heels less than 30 seconds apart to give the match its final score.
