The undefeated start to the 2018 season reached 10 games for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team on Saturday, as it defeated the Syracuse Orange 5-1 at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Freshman Erin Matson scored twice to lead the Tar Heel attack, including the first goal of the game in the 17th minute. Ashley Hoffman, Eva Van’t Hoog and Bryn Boylan also added goals for UNC (10-0, 4-0 ACC)–which continues to roll through its competition with ease.
The Tar Heels racked up 21 shots in the game, compared to just two for Syracuse.
A goal in the 54th minute by Tess Queen was the only offense mustered by the visitors throughout the entirety of the day.
“It was a very nice win,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “I particularly like the fact we grew from the last game. Against Virginia on Wednesday we had seven shots, and today we had 21. So the offensive pressure was good. I still would like a few more corners, but it was a hard-working game in the heat and I think we used our depth and shared the ball unselfishly. We moved it really well and I think that makes us a difficult team to play against.”
