UNC field hockey is undefeated so far this 2022 season, but it’s not just on the field where the team is holding a winning streak.
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tar Heel freshman Ryleigh Heck earned its Offensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday, marking the fourth consecutive week a Carolina player has snagged the honor. On Wednesday, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association also named Heck as its Offensive Player of the Week.
Heck, who is a first-year forward from North Beach, N.J., notched her first career hat trick with the top-ranked UNC program during its blowout win of Syracuse on October 14. Heck scored Carolina’s third, fourth and sixth goals of the game, as well as assisting Erin Matson for a goal on the fifth-year senior’s record-setting afternoon. Matson set a new all-time points record in NCAA field hockey, now standing at 308 points.
Meanwhile, Heck is off to a fast start in her Carolina career. Through her first 12 games in Tar Heel Blue, she has tallied 10 goals and two assists.
The Tar Heels are set to continue their home stand in Karen Shelton Stadium this weekend. On Friday, October 21, No. 1 UNC will host No. 7 Virginia while doing a field hockey sock giveaway. Sunday, October 23, will wrap up Carolina’s home regular season schedule, as the No. 9 Saint Joseph’s Hawks come to Chapel Hill for Senior Day.
