A pair of hat tricks from senior Marie McCool and freshman Jamie Ortega helped carry the seventh-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory on the road over the High Point Panthers on Friday night.

Ela Hazar added a goal and three assists for head coach Jenny Levy’s Tar Heels (1-1), who picked up their first victory of the 2018 campaign after suffering a double-overtime upset loss to James Madison last weekend.

Other key contributions for UNC included two goals apiece from Marisa DiVietro, Katie Hoeg and Gianna Bowe.

The Tar Heels opened up a 10-5 by halftime, before cruising through the second half to the easy victory–as High Point (1-1) trailed by as many as seven goals before closing the game on a 4-1 run.

In total, UNC tallied 28 shots compared to 22 for its opponents. Perhaps the most important stat of the game, however, was the fact that the Tar Heels gained possession following 18 of 25 draw controls–the equivalent to face-offs.

“It was great to get back out on the field,” Levy said afterwards.  “We were ready to play after a tough loss last weekend.  Every opponent gives us a different challenge and helps us to continue to get better and grow.

“We did a lot of great things on the field tonight,” the coach added. “But it is early in the season and I know we will continue to improve on the details.”
