Despite losing in crushing fashion in overtime to Pittsburgh last Thursday, a pair of UNC football players were recognized with ACC Weekly Honors on Monday for their efforts in the loss.

Sam Howell was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the fifth time in 10 games this season after throwing for 322 yards and three touchdowns against a solid Pitt defense. Howell’s 2,794 passing yards were enough to break TJ Yates’ all-time UNC record for a freshman, and his 29 touchdown passes are just one shy of Mitchell Trubisky’s all-time UNC single-season record.

Junior Dazz Newsome was also named the ACC Receiver of the Week for catching a career-high 11 passes from Howell for 170 yards and a touchdown. The 11 receptions are the most by a UNC player since current Pittsburgh Steeler Ryan Switzer had 13 against NC State in 2016.
