After a perfect 6-0 start to the 2018 season, the eighth-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team saw its chances of an undefeated campaign come to an end Monday afternoon at Kenan Stadium–as the Tar Heels suffered a 10-6 loss at the hands of the No. 5 Denver Pioneers.
Alex Trippi, William Perry and Chris Cloutier each scored twice for UNC (6-1), but that would not be enough to hold off a Denver team dead-set on pulling off a signature road victory.
As far as positive moments go, the Tar Heels did strike first blood when Trippi scored less than six minutes into the game and Cloutier’s second goal of the day gave him 100 for his career.
They also racked up 28 shots compared to just 21 for the Pioneers.
Denver simply proved to be too much in this one, however, reeling off the next five goals following Trippi’s tally and holding onto the lead the rest of the way.
Goal number 100 for Cloutier cut Denver’s lead to 8-6 late in the third quarter, but the Pioneers held the Tar Heels scoreless in the final period.
Ethan Walker led the visitors with three goals, while his teammate Austin French chipped in a goal and three assists.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels will now move on to face Hofstra on the road this Saturday, March 10 at noon.
