Behind phenomenal efforts from stars Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg, the third-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team cruised to a 19-5 blowout victory on Wednesday evening in Blacksburg over the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Ortega tallied five goals and two assists, while Hoeg added four goals and four assists of her own.
In addition to those efforts, sophomore Scottie Rose Growney chipped in a career-high three goals and seven other Tar Heels added one goal apiece.
The teams were tied 2-2 in the early going before a 7-1 UNC run helped give the Tar Heels (9-2, 2-1 ACC) a commanding 9-3 lead over the Hokies (8-5, 1-2 ACC) at halftime–an advantage that would only continue to build on the rest of the way.
“Today was a good team win against an ACC opponent,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards. “Our defense played a great game, and we got scoring contributions from 10 different players. Every game presents us with opportunities to build and improve.”
