Three players recorded two hits apiece for the UNC baseball team in Blacksburg on Saturday, but the Tar Heels still ended up on the wrong end of a 6-4 score-line in a loss to No. 24 Virginia Tech.

Justice Thompson, Angel Zarate and Max Troiani did their part to help the Tar Heels (6-3, 2-3 ACC) avoid a third straight loss, but Virginia Tech (7-1, 4-1 ACC) had other ideas–taking its second straight win and clinching the weekend series.

Thompson’s solo home run in the third inning put UNC ahead 2-1, while Zarate’s RBI single in the fourth helped the Tar Heels tie the game back at 3-3 after the Hokies plated two runs in the home half of the third.

Three runs in the sixth inning helped Virginia Tech take a commanding lead just one inning after UNC failed to score with the bases loaded.

Thompson added another RBI in the eighth inning as the Tar Heels tried to mount a comeback, but that ultimately ended up as the game’s final run.

Joey Lancellotti was credited with the loss on the mound after pitching the final three innings for UNC.
