A late rally over the final three holes lifted NC State to a comeback victory over the UNC men’s golf team on Tuesday at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate–which was played at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.

Although UNC led for the majority of the final round, the Tar Heels played the last three holes at three over par.

The Wolfpack took advantage of the late miscues and turned in a three under par performance across the same three holes.

This turned what was a three-shot UNC lead into a two-shot NC State victory. Both teams entered the third–and final–round tied at 16 under par.

NC State’s Stephen Franken was the tournament’s individual winner, as he cleared the rest of his competition by a whopping eight strokes.

Franken was responsible for 15 of the Wolfpack’s 16 strokes under par for the event.

William Register was UNC’s top performer in the tournament, finishing third overall with a score of six under par.

“We had a positive swing in our favor on the 15th hole where our guys executed some incredible golf shots under pressure,” Tar Heel head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “However, NC State executed better than us on the final three holes and that was the difference.

“Our guys were poised and focused today but we came up short,” the coach added. “We’ve already had productive conversations about how we can learn from today and how we can all be better.”
