The UNC men’s golf team managed to pull off a 6-4 win over NC State in match play on Friday at the Carolina Country Club as part of the I-40 Classic.

Ryan Burnett (3 and 2), Ryan Smith (5 and 4), George McNeely (6 and 4) and Kenan Poole (2 up) each won their individual matches for the Tar Heels. UNC also received an alternate shot point and earned a half point from two other matches to seal up the win.

NC State won three of the day’s 10 matches, taking down UNC stars Peter Fountain, Austin Hitt and Austin Greaser.

“Today was a lot of fun and we are thankful to NC State, as well as the Carolina Country Club for hosting us,” says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “Ted Kiegel, his staff and the membership were excited to host this inaugural match and we appreciated everyone who came out to support the Tar Heels and Wolfpack. Today’s format was different than we are used to playing in collegiate golf, but one that will help both teams as we prepare for the ACC Championship and National Championship formats that both include match play.”
