UNC field hockey sophomore Abby Pitcairn was named Thursday as the winner of the NCAA Elite 90 Award, which honors the player with the highest Grade Point Average at the NCAA Final Four.
Pitcairn is a biology major who currently boasts a 3.86 GPA.
She becomes the third Tar Heel field hockey player to ever win the award, and 10th Tar Heel across all sports to do so.
“This is a great honor for Abby, for our program and for the University of North Carolina,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said. “You can’t win the award if your team doesn’t make the final four, so I love that we as a school have put our student-athletes in a position to be recognized this way. Then it’s up to them to perform at an extraordinary level academically, and Abby has done that. She works hard every day to be the best she can, and we’re all so proud to see her win the Elite 90 Award.”
UNC will face Boston College in the NCAA Semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m.
