Malin Evert scored a career-high four goals on Sunday afternoon, as the sixth-ranked UNC field hockey team picked up a 6-4 road victory over the Liberty Flames in its regular season finale.
Freshman Meredith Sholder chipped in the other two goals for the Tar Heels (13-4), who racked up a 22-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Three of Evert’s four goals came in the first 23 minutes. This was part of a 4-0 UNC run early in the game, one that ultimately dug a hole too deep for Liberty to climb out of.
The Flames (7-10) got on the board with a penalty stroke goal from Agueda Moroni just before halftime, while outscoring UNC 3-2 in the second half.
Defensively, the Tar Heels held tight just long enough down the stretch to ensure they wouldn’t waste the team’s second-highest scoring output of the season.
“I’m very pleased to come away with win,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said. “Liberty is a tough place to play. They’re well-coached and dangerous, and we knew that coming in.”
