The top-ranked UNC field hockey team improved to 13-0 so far in 2018 on Sunday, with a 7-1 victory on the road against the No. 19 Liberty Flames.
Six different players scored at least once for the Tar Heels, including two goals from Catherine Hayden–who now has 12 on the season.
Hayden opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the game, as UNC opened up a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.
It was the second half where the Tar Heels really exploded, however, as they scored five more goals before Liberty finally got on the board in the final minute of the game with a goal from Jill Bolton.
In total, the UNC offense tallied 26 shots in the game compared to just 10 for Liberty.
“Playing Liberty at Liberty is tough – they have a great home field advantage and they always have a good crowd,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “I’m happy for our team we were able to come in and play well, get some early goals and then open it up in the second half and give everyone a chance to play. It was another good day for us.”
