It wasn’t the easiest victory of the season for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team on Sunday in Chapel Hill, but a win is a win.

The Tar Heels defeated the No. 17 Liberty Flames 3-2 to extend their ACC-record winning streak up to 37 games dating back to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Megan DuVernois and Erin Matson each scored in the first half to give UNC a 2-0 halftime lead, while Marissa Creatore added what would become the game-winner in the third quarter.

In defeat, Liberty (9-4) became just the third team all season to score multiple goals on the Tar Heels (14-0) this season. Flames goalkeeper Allison Schaefer had a game-high eight saves to keep her team in the game the whole way.

“I’m proud of our team for earning a win against an energetic and well-coached Liberty team,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards.
