All five teams ranked the the Top 5 of the national polls entered the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational in Illinois this weekend, and the No. 4 UNC men’s golf team reigned supreme by the tournament’s end.
Carolina finished two over par, three strokes better than No. 3 Arizona State, to win the team title. No. 2 Oklahoma State finished third, and No. 1 Pepperdine, the defending NCAA champions, finished eighth.
“This was a big-time win because of the field, but also because it’s a very demanding and difficult major championship golf course,” said UNC head coach Andrew DiBetto. “Every shot requires full focus and attention, especially under pressure and especially the final few holes, which are incredibly difficult. Just like last weekend, our guys remained composed and confident throughout the final round and under pressure.”
This is the first time the program has won back-to-back tournaments since 2014-15, and the first time since 1996 the Tar Heels have won their first two events of the season.
Junior Austin Greaser, who this summer finished second at the U.S. Amateur Championship, won the tournament’s individual title, and was the only player in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds. A 68 during the second round included a hole-in-one on the 13th hole, Greaser’s first ace of his career.
A tough birdie on the 18th hole sealed Greaser’s win. He won the individual title by two strokes over players from Alabama and Arizona State.
“Austin has played tremendous golf for a long time now,” said DiBitetto. “All of us are excited for him to get his first collegiate win and to do so in such dramatic fashion by holing out on 18 and to do it on a golf course where he plans on competing in major championships in the future.”
Carolina will have two weeks off before hitting the links again for the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Arkansas, to be played October 4 through October 6.
