The UNC men’s golf team is moving on to the next phase of the NCAA Championship in Arizona, after a solid four rounds of play in which the Tar Heels finished tied for first place among 30 teams.

“Just proud of the guys for what we’ve accomplished to this point, but we’re not done,” said head coach Andrew DiBitetto. “It feels like the tournament is just getting started for us and we have a lot of things we want to accomplish this week, and the fun starts tomorrow.”

Carolina tied with Vanderbilt and Oklahoma for first place at 14 over par through four rounds. The stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship began with 30 teams, and after three rounds the field was pared down to 15. Monday’s fourth round whittled the field down once more to eight. UNC was never in any serious danger of missing the cut during the weekend, hovering around fourth place before moving up into a tie for first on Monday.

On the individual leaderboard, Ryan Burnett led the Tar Heels by shooting even par through four rounds of play, including a 69 during round two. Burnett tied for first among all players after the conclusion of the fourth round, forcing the individual championship to a four-man playoff with players from Texas, Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt. Burnett ultimately fell to the Commodores’ Gordon Sargent.

“It’s obviously a great honor to be in a playoff for the national championship and I wish it came out a little different,” Burnett said. “But that’s golf and I gave it my all, so it was a good week.”

Still, Burnett and teammate David Ford both finished in the field’s top 5, marking the first time in program history two Tar Heels finished in the top 5 at the NCAA Championship. Ford shot one over par.

As a team, Carolina will now move on to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship, which begins Tuesday. The Tar Heels, the No. 3 seed in the eight-team field, will face No. 6 seed Pepperdine in the national quarterfinals. As a team, the Waves shot 26 over par through four rounds, 12 behind the Tar Heels. UNC will look to improve on its finish in last season’s NCAA Championship, when the team fell in the quarterfinals to Arizona State.
