An outstanding second round helped the UNC men’s golf team advance out of regional play and into the NCAA Championship. The Tar Heels were one of 14 teams competing at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, CT, and placed second in the field to punch their ticket to the championship round. The top five teams from each regional advance.

Carolina tied for the lowest round of any team in the field during the three-round regional, shooting a 13-under 267 in Tuesday’s second round. It was the team’s best round of the season, its lowest-ever team score in regional action and second-lowest in any competition in program history.

The Tar Heels shot a one-over 281 on Wednesday to finish in second place overall, seven strokes behind regional champion Wake Forest. UNC shot three eagles during the regional, most among all 14 teams.

Junior Austin Greaser came in first place on the individual leaderboard, shooting below par in each round. It’s the second tournament Greaser has won this year.

Greaser was major reason for Carolina’s strong second round, as he shot a blazing seven-under 63, a career-best score. His three-round score to par of 10-under is tied for the best ever by a Tar Heel in a regional. The overall score of 200 is also by far the best in his career and the best ever by a Tar Heel in a regional. Greaser is the first Tar Heel to ever win an NCAA regional.

Teammate Ryan Gerard tied for second place behind Greaser at nine-under after shooting 65s in each of the first two rounds. Gerard is the first Tar Heel ever with multiple rounds of 65 or better in NCAA regional play. His five career rounds of 65 or better are the most in program history.

This is the second straight year two Tar Heels have finished in the top 10 of a regional, but the first time ever two have finished in the top five.

Greaser, Gerard, David Ford, Ryan Burnett and Peter Fountain combined to shoot an 821, demolishing the previous school record in a regional of 829. Their 19-under score is the second-lowest score to par in a regional in program history.

This is the fifth straight tournament in which the Tar Heels will advance to the NCAA Championship, and the third straight regional in which they have placed second, which ties a program record for best finish ever in a regional.

Up next for Carolina is the NCAA Championship, to be played from May 27 through June 1 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. The Tar Heels finished tied for fifth in last year’s championship.
