The winner of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship is ensured a spot in some of the sport’s most hallowed senior tournaments. This year, three Tar Heels will be among those competing for that honor.

Senior Ryan Gerard, junior Austin Greaser, and sophomore Peter Fountain will join 309 other amateurs from around the country to compete in the event, which runs from Monday, August 9 to Sunday, August 15 at the Oakmont and Longue Vue clubs in Pennsylvania.

While Gerard and Greaser made their way to the Amateur Championship through qualifying tournaments, Fountain qualified because of his place inside the World Amateur Top 50. He is currently ranked No. 34 in the world, and was named a first-team All-American and a member of the All-Nicklaus team in 2021.

Each of the three golfers will tee off on Monday, with Gerard and Greaser beginning in Oakmont and Fountain in Longue Vue. The field of 312 will be cut to 64 on Wednesday, when the tournament begins its match-play phase. The 36-hole championship round is Sunday.

This year’s tournament will be steeped in history, as the Oakmont club has hosted 9 U.S. Open Championships, the most recent coming in 2016, as well as 3 PGA Championships.

Whichever golfer wins the Amateur Championship will receive an invitation to compete in the 2022 U.S. and British Opens, and likely an invitation to play at the Masters in Augusta, G.A.
