Former UNC standout running back–and Charlotte native–Elijah Hood currently finds himself in a battle to make the roster for the Carolina Panthers, which opened up preseason play on Thursday with a 28-23 victory at home over the Buffalo Bills.

In that game, Hood saw playing time in the fourth quarter and made the most of it–hauling in a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor Heinicke that would ultimately serve as the game-winner.

The former seventh-round draft pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2017 also had three carries on the ground for seven yards, but it was his beautiful catch-and-run on a wheel route out of the backfield that got everyone’s attention.

A slew of former Tar Heels on the Panthers’ roster quickly came to congratulate Hood on the sidelines following the play, as he looks to earn a spot on the final roster and get his first NFL regular season playing time.
