LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 24 UNC dropped two games on Friday on day one of the Louisville Classic at Ulmer Stadium. The Tar Heels lost 4-2 to Wisconsin and to No. 11 Louisville to drop to 18-9 (3-0) on the season.
Constance Orr finished the day with four hits and two runs, while Haleigh Dickey had two hits, a run and an RBI for Carolina. The Tar Heels left 11 on base between the two games and had three errors on the day.
GAME ONE
Orr led off the second with a double to left, advancing to third on a fly out before scoring on a single through the left side by Tracy Chandless.
The Badgers drew two walks in the bottom half of that inning, and a single by Marissa Mersch then loaded the bases, but Lori Spingola struck out the final two batters to prevent any runs.
But the next inning, Wisconsin’s Whitney Massey homered to left center, knocking in Stephanie Peace who was hit by a pitch. The Badgers then added two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back solo shots by Peace to left and Massey to right center.
In the sixth, Dickey singled to left and advanced to second on a single by Orr. Dickey then scored on a double to center by Amber Parrish to make it 4-2.
Spingola (11-6) pitched 4.0 innings in the loss, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out six. Ashley Bonepitched the final two innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
GAME TWO
Erin Satterfield drew a walk in the first, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a hard single down the right field line by Dickey. The Tar Heels had the bases loaded with one out on the board, but were not able to push any more runs across the plate after Louisville made an early pitching change.
In the bottom half of the inning, Katie Keller led off with a walk before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Trimble. Alicja Wolny singled to let, advancing Keller to third before she scored when Maggie Ruckenbrod reached base on a UNC error.
Keller also led off the third by getting on base after she was hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a single to left center by Wolny as the Cardinals took the 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, Orr hit a solid triple down the right field line and scored the tying run when Amber Parrish reached base on a Louisville error.
With the score even heading into the seventh, Wolny singled to left center before Maggie Ruckenbrod hit a walk-off two-run homer out left to give Louisville the win.
Spingola pitched all six innings, striking out four while giving up seven hits and four walks.
