Orange County has opened a shelter for residents displaced by the flooding that came Monday morning from the final remnants of Hurricane Florence.
County emergency officials announced Monday afternoon that a shelter had been opened at the DSS Commons at 113 Mayo Street in Hillsborough. The shelter will be open for up to 72 hours for those who have been impacted by flooding experienced during heavy rainfall on Monday morning. The shelter is pet friendly, according to the county.
Orange County opened two shelters last week to allow residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate before the massive storm made landfall. While 160 individuals were at the shelters at one time, the facilities were closed over the weekend as residents returned to their homes after it appeared Orange County had dodged major flooding issues associated with the storm.
UNC – Chapel Hill is operating a mega shelter for coastal evacuees and was also taking in some local residents.
